Prepare Your Business for Microsoft Publisher’s Retirement

Prepare Your Business for Microsoft Publisher’s Retirement

If you’ve spent any time in an office over the last two decades, there is a good chance you’ve used Microsoft Publisher. It was always that reliable, slightly old-school tool sitting in the Office suite that got the job done when Word was being too stubborn about image layout.

Well, Microsoft is officially pulling the plug. On October 13, 2026, Publisher reaches its official End of Life.

What "End of Life" Actually Means for You

In IT, when we say a program has reached its End of Life, we really just mean Microsoft is walking away from it. No more bug fixes, no technical support, and—most importantly—no security patches.

How this hits your desk depends on how your business accesses Microsoft Office:

If you subscribe to Microsoft 365: Publisher will eventually be removed from your desktop apps entirely. Once Microsoft pushes that update, the app simply won't open anymore.

If you use a standalone version: If you purchased an older, one-time version of Publisher (like Office 2019 or 2021), the program might still launch on your PC. However, it will remain permanently frozen in time without a single security update.

The Real Problem: Trapped Files and Security Risks

There are two main reasons you shouldn't just ignore this deadline and hope for the best.

The first issue is trapped data. Publisher saves files in its own proprietary format—those .pub extension files. Almost no other design application on the planet opens .pub files natively. If Publisher goes away and your company's old brochures, flyers, and newsletter templates are still saved as .pub files, you won't be able to open them.

The second issue is security. Running retired, unpatched software on your corporate network is like leaving a ground-floor window unlatched because you don't open it very often. Once Microsoft stops fixing security holes, bad actors actively look for ways to exploit those exact vulnerabilities to get inside business networks.

You Don't Need to Panic

October 2026 gives us plenty of runway—but preparing now keeps it from turning into a fire drill later. Here is a simple step you can take today:

Open File Explorer on your computer, click into your shared drive or main documents folder, and search for *.pub in the search bar.

This simple search will show you every Publisher file sitting on your system so you actually know what assets you're dealing with. From there, you can save the important ones as PDFs or start moving your active templates over to modern tools like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or standard design platforms.

You shouldn't have to spend your Tuesday afternoon digging through server folders, converting legacy file formats, or testing alternative software. You have a business to run.

At Business Solutions & Software Group, we help our clients handle these software retirements smoothly behind the scenes so nobody loses work or misses a beat:

Network Audits

We scan your workstations and servers to locate every .pub file across your organization so no critical document gets left behind.

File Conversion

We ensure your existing designs are converted into standard, modern formats that remain fully accessible long after Publisher is gone.

Software Setup

We help you select and set up easy-to-use replacement tools that fit your team’s existing workflow and budget.

Software transitions only become stressful when they're left until the last minute.

If you want help protecting your Publisher files or ensuring your business technology stays supported and secure, reach out to our team at Business Solutions & Software Group today by calling (954) 575-3992.
