4 Simple Steps to Instantly Speed Up Your PC

4 Simple Steps to Instantly Speed Up Your PC

Remember when you first started your computer? Chances are, it was blazing fast… especially compared to now, when it seems to drag its way along. The reason is simple enough: as your workstation does its job, it collects digital baggage, which gets in the way.

Here is a simple, 4-step checklist to clear this digital clutter and get your speed back.

1. The Magic Restart

It sounds cliché, but many people just hibernate their laptops for weeks. A full Restart clears the temporary memory (RAM) and stops "stuck" programs that are silently slowing you down.

How to fix it:

  • Go to Start > Power > Restart. (Do this at least once every few days!)

2. Stop Apps from Autostarting

Many programs (like Spotify, Zoom, or Teams) try to start automatically when you turn on your PC. If 10 things are trying to start at once, your computer will crawl.

How to fix it:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard to open the Task Manager.
  • Click the Startup apps tab (it looks like a little speedometer or a list icon on the left).
  • Look for apps with a high startup impact.
  • Right-click any app you don’t need the second you turn on your PC and select Disable.

Don't worry, this doesn't delete the app; it just means it only opens when you actually click on it.

3. Clear Out the Digital Junk

If your hard drive is nearly full, Windows doesn't have enough room to move files around while it works.

How to fix it:

  • Click the Start button and type Storage Settings, then press Enter.
  • Wait for it to show you what is taking up space.
  • Click on Temporary files.
  • Click Remove files. This clears out old update installers and browser junk that you don’t need.

4. Manage Your Browser Tabs

Typically, the most common resource hog isn't a virus—it’s having 50 browser tabs open. Each tab is like a tiny program running in the background.

  • If you aren't using a tab, close it. If you need to save it for later, use a Bookmark (Ctrl + D) instead of leaving it open.

If you follow these steps and it’s still slow, your computer might be running an update in the background… or it might need one. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates
