2026 Has Already Seen Some Cool Tech Developments

To paraphrase the titular character’s philosophy from the 1986 dramedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, technology moves pretty fast… if you don’t stop and look around every once in a while, you might miss it.

We’ve already seen technology take major strides this year, with many innovations offering utility in business settings. Let’s discuss five, and how they could impact the technology we use in the future.

Digital Twins Are Giving Better Insights Everywhere

If you aren’t familiar with the idea of a digital twin, the name effectively sums it up: it’s a virtual scale replica of some object or system that appears in the real world that allows one to approximate the real-life responses that the actual object or system would have. Thus far, their primary use has been in manufacturing and city development, but forensic investigators are now using it in ways that television programs like CSI and its ilk depicted.

Crime scenes and accident sites can be digitally replicated—down to the millimeter—to stress-test simulations, all to narrow down what actually happened based on the most faithful version of the evidence. The same technology can also apply to the business network, with simulated cyberattacks providing valuable insights without posing an actual threat, allowing vulnerabilities to be patched and sealed.

AI Has Identified More Accessible Resources

Modern devices, vehicles, and other infrastructural machines have been rising in price. One of the biggest drivers of this hike is that these systems rely on rare-earth minerals. In addition to being taxing on the environment to mine, they are expensive and wrapped up in the supply chain. However, thanks to the strategic use of AI to support their efforts, researchers at the University of New Hampshire may have found a viable alternative.

Using artificial intelligence to scan 67,000 potential compounds, the researchers identified 25 new magnetic materials (critically, those that don’t require rare-earth elements) at a much lower cost than they could have otherwise, providing valuable alternatives to current manufacturing standards.

Scientists Have Synthesized “Superwood”

As a material, wood is pretty accessible, if relatively fragile—especially as compared to other modern options. At least, that once was the case. Recently, scientists developed a “superwood” that outperforms natural wood and even some steel alloys, creating a lightweight, sustainable material that meets modern construction demands. It’s even less environmentally impactful to produce than steel so far.

Paper-Based Batteries Have Been Showcased

e-Waste is a considerable problem, especially in terms of its environmental impacts. At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Symposium, the Flint Paper battery was unveiled as a way to reduce e-waste. A lot of modern tech uses lithium-ion batteries for power, which are still challenging to recycle… provided they don’t wind up rotting in a landfill. The Flint battery solves this by replacing the lithium with simple paper and salt, making it completely biodegradable. While it can only keep low-power devices (like pet trackers and smartwatches) running, this marks a significant step toward less-impactful tech being normalized.

HVAC is Being Reconsidered

The purpose of any technology is always to make it easier to solve a problem, many of which have financial roots. Take the issue of energy costs (especially in the commercial space) where HVAC is involved. Instead of manually heating or cooling the air, modern heat pump units will transfer thermal energy from the outside air to the interior and vice versa. This shift is far more efficient, which can benefit individuals and companies alike once implemented.

Long Story Short: Tech is Here to Help, and We’re Here to Help with Yours
